The Mutiny of Aranjuez, a popular uprising against the Prime Minister, Manuel de Goday in the early nineteenth century was the basis behind the celebrations. Goday was despised by the nobility for his humble roots and blamed by the peasants for the economic crisis, although he grew increasingly powerful and used his influence to sign unpopular treaties with France. This unrest exploded into mutiny in 1808, where angry Aranjuez locals attacked Goday’s home, captured him and forced King Charles IV to dismiss him.
Actual re-enactments of the mutiny itself takes place in the Fiestas del Motín festivities. Locals wearing period costume recreate these turbulent scenes, using texts based on ‘Episodios Nacionales’ by Pérez Galdos. As well as Goya-inspired street scenes, witchcraft and animated bullfights, one of the other thrilling highlights is the burning of Goday’s palace.
